GMB Union slams company’s claims of commitment to dialogue as “simply untrue”.
Nearly 100 rope workers at Bridon International in Wallsend are staging a second 24-hour strike on Thursday, 18 September, as frustration mounts over the company’s refusal to return to the negotiating table.
The dispute centres around a 2.5% pay offer, a figure that represents a real-terms pay cut amid rising living costs. Despite overwhelming support for industrial action, with almost 90% of GMB members voting to strike on a 90% turnout, company bosses have failed to re-engage in meaningful talks.
Michael Hunt, GMB Organiser, said:
“The company’s claim that it remains open to dialogue is simply not true
“Since our members rejected their derisory two-year offer, we’ve had nothing but radio silence.
“Their public statements are disingenuous - they are not committed to resolving this dispute.
“Strike action will continue on 18 September and 30 September, with further escalation planned for 1 October.
“GMB remains ready to negotiate, but the ball is firmly in Bridon’s court.
“Only a revised offer above the rejected 2.5% will bring this dispute to a resolution.”
