Leeds May Day ‘March For The Alternative’, Saturday 30th April

12 Apr 2011

Every year Leeds TUC organise an annual march to celebrate May Day in Leeds city centre. Historically this has been a very well-attended event and an important one for the labour movement calendar in Leeds.

However, this years event will be different to those in previous years. The trade union movement and all working people in Britain are facing an unprecedented attack on their jobs, pay, pensions, housing, welfare, environment, public services, industrial rights and political associations, and the need for a major statement of working class solidarity in Leeds has never been greater.

Furthermore, there is a pressing need to build on and maintain the momentum achieved by the March for The Alternative in London on March 26th. We would therefore like to inform you that the May Day 2011 ‘Leeds March For the Alternative’ will be a major event, themed around opposition to the cuts agenda, and we invite you to attend, to take part and help to make it a success.

The march in Leeds will to take place on Saturday 30th April. Assembly is from 11am at Victoria Gardens (outside Leeds Art Gallery), which the march around Leeds City Centre beginning at 12 noon. After the march there will be speakers, including John McDonnell MP (t.b.c), and live music in Victoria Gardens.
