#BreakTheBias Blog: By Sarah Sheehan

Bias is defined as inclination or prejudices for and against one person or group, especially in a way considered unfair. To effectively break the bias we must, initially, recognise and accept that bias exists within society and across socio- economic and cultural platforms, and in many different forms.

Bias is defined as inclination or prejudices for and against one person or group, especially in a way considered unfair. To effectively break the bias we must, initially, recognise and accept that bias exists within society and across socio- economic and cultural platforms, and in many different forms.

During International Women’s Day we saw businesses, companies and individuals come together to denounce bias against women and girls and while this is much welcomed, actions speak louder than words. Now is the time for those who spoke out to take those words and pledges and put them into action and it begins with education and understanding around unconscious bias, gender inequality and changing behaviors and attitudes.

We can all uncover bias by starting with ourselves, by paying attention to our thoughts and actions especially those regarding persons with different characteristics and identities. We can challenge bias by calling out inequality and bias in all areas of society, be that in our workplaces, our home or in public spaces.  Collectively we can create a more equal world by calling out bias, inequality and discrimination and by championing diversity and inclusion for women and girls.

Maya Angelou, American Poet and Activist: “Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it and possibly without claiming it, she stands up for all women.”

Farzana Jumma Regional Equality Forum Chair :“I will challenge gender stereotypes, discrimination & bias by promoting positive visibility of GMB women members.”

Sarah Sheehan GMB Activist and Regional Equality Forum rep: This year’s theme for International Women’s Day was break the bias.  So, let's break the bias by pledging what we will do to fight for all women in our workplaces, and in the GMB - and make sure we win.
