Manchester Attack and General Election

It is with deep sadness that I need to send you this note this morning.  Please see below confirmation that, rightly, all campaigning both national and local, has been suspended until further notice.

Watching footage of young people inside the arena frightened and confused and then parents waiting outside, desperate for news, is an experience no one should ever have to endure.

The GMB's love, thoughts and prayers go to all those affected by this tragedy.

And when you question the horror of this world, please think of the heroes.

Our brilliant emergency services who go towards trouble when all others rightly go the other way. And GMB security staff on duty at the venue last night, our private hire drivers who were ferrying people around for free.

And the incredible people of Manchester who opened their doors through the night to those tragically affected.

Be proud of them, and of yourselves for going above and beyond the call of duty in people's hour of need.

Warmest wishes at this terrible time.

Tim.

Dear colleagues

Following the dreadful events in Manchester last night Jeremy Corbyn has spoken with the Prime Minister and has agreed that that all national campaigning in the general election will be suspended until further notice.

In addition, for today, we are asking that all local Labour Party campaigning is suspended.

Below is the statement that was issued last night:

Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Labour Party, said:

“I am horrified by the horrendous events in Manchester last night. My thoughts are with families and friends of those who have died and  been injured.

“Today the whole country will grieve for the people who have lost their lives.

“I have spoken with Andy Burnham, the mayor of Manchester, who has fully briefed me on the operational response in the city.

“I would like to pay tribute to the emergency services for their bravery and professionalism in dealing with last night’s appalling events.

“I have spoken with the Prime Minister and we have agreed that that all national campaigning in the general election will be suspended until further notice.”

Yours

Iain McNicol
