FRONTLINE WORKERS DEMAND CHANCELLOR INVEST IN HUMBERSIDE ENERGY INDUSTRY

The GMB Workers’ Transition Panel have written to the Treasury calling for regional investment, says GMB Union.

Ahead of the Budget, GMB energy workers are urging the Government to “take workers with the transition” and avoid decisions that risk draining investment and jobs out of industrial communities like Hull and the Humber.

GMB is highlighting the need for Government policy clarity needed to unlock a proposed two billion investment in the Rough Gas storage facility, as well as invest in local skills, and balance new and existing energy investment.

In a letter to the Chancellor GMB calls for the Treasury to take a number of proactive steps that will safeguard the future of industry in Humberside and deliver good, unionised jobs.

Dave Douglas, Chair of GMB Workers’ Transition Panel, said:

“Thousands of workers and their communities across Humberside will be directly affected by the Chancellor's decisions next week.

“Those who work in industries dependant upon an affordable and secure energy market are rightly concerned.

“GMB is calling on the Treasury to take a serious look at the future of sites, such as Rough, that provide both direct and indirect jobs, invest in the current and future workforce as well as listening to front-line energy workers.

“It is vital that workers are centrally involved in the transition debate. We won't stand by and see industries destroyed.

“To misstep now will be devastating for the future of Hull and the Humber.”
