GMB ANGER OVER PROPOSED MIGRATION OF 220 JARROW JOBS TO HUNGARY WITH NO MEANINGFUL CONSULTATION

We will continue to push to save the site and will be presenting ideas on how to do this next week says GMB.

Cigarette filter company Essentra PLC has begun a 45 day consultation process from 8th July over their proposals to transfer the majority of its work from their Jarrow site to Hungary, resulting in 220 job losses by the end of the year.

Keir Howe, GMB Northern regional organiser, said "GMB is angry and devastated by the announcement to close the site in Jarrow. We will be doing everything within our power to mitigate the impact of this upon our members.

The long established site has 250 experienced and dedicated employees and GMB believe this is a site with a
viable future.

The site makes a profit so in our view there is no need to close it.

A 45 day consultation period started yesterday, 8th July, but at the first meeting, GMB raise major
concerns about the consultation process.

I am concerned the employer is not engaging in a meaningful consultation process as much of the
information presented so far show the move is a fait
acompli."

GMB will continue to push to save the site and will be presenting ideas on how to do this next week".
