GMB SLAMS THERESA MAY’S GRAMMAR SCHOOL PLANS

A generation of children risks being let down by a system that entrenches social division and stops social mobility dead in its tracks says GMB

GMB, the union for school support staff, has commented on news that Theresa May has defended plans for a return to grammar schools to conservative MPs. The Prime Minister told said that she wanted "an element of selection" in education.

Speaking on the Today programme, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said the Government’s aim would be to "widen choice for parents in every part of the country."

Karen Leonard, GMB schools organiser, said "It comes as no surprise to GMB that the prime minister advocates ‘an element of selection’ in schools.

Research has shown time and time again that areas with grammar schools disadvantage the poor and help only the very richest of children. A generation of children risks being let down by a system that entrenches social division and stops social mobility dead in its tracks.

GMB is far from reassured by Mr Fallon’s remarks about "more choice for parents in every part of the country." Affluent parents can already hire private tutors, buy extra equipment and books, and pay for extracurricular activities without grammar schools further tipping the balance in their favour. Others in society cannot afford these privileges, a harsh lesson for an eleven year old to learn.

Communities deserve quality, local schooling for all children regardless of their background."
