Delegates heard stars from stage, screen and politics talk about their life experiences and celebrated inspirational women from across the region at the GMB Women’s Conference in Leeds.

GMB Yorkshire & North Derbyshire Region held the event at The Met Hotel in Leeds on the 3rd October.

Guest speakers included actress and writer Tracy Brabin, famed for her roles in Coronation Street and Emmerdale, MP for Dewsbury and Mirfield Paula Sherriff, campaigners Ann Scargill & Betty Cook from Women Against Pit Closures and local business woman Rachel Salway.

Tim Roache, GMB Regional Secretary for Yorkshire & North Derbyshire Region, said: “GMB has been at the forefront of the fight for equality within workplaces and society since Eleanor Marx carried a motion at the second conference of the union in 1891 in Dublin demanding equal pay for work of equal value for men and women.

Women members are now over 50% of GMB’s membership.  Eleanor Marx was an inspirational woman and that was the theme for this year’s conference. The delegation played a full part and had their say in helping to shape future policy.

Delegates heard stars from stage, screen and politics talk about their life experiences and celebrated inspirational women from across the region.

It was fantastic that so many GMB members gave up their Saturday to go along to what was an inspiring day.  The GMBs network of women activists is second to none and it was heart-warming to see that so many of our young members, who will be the next generation of GMB activists, attending this event.”
