SHEFFIELD COUNCIL CLEANERS BALLOT TO STRIKE OVER FAIR PAY

Staff are sick to death with the council making false promises, says GMB Union

Sheffield Council's lowest paid staff are balloting to take industrial action after years of pay injustice.

Despite repeated promises from multiple leaders of the council, Sheffield cleaning staff have still not been given their promised pay increase.

Staff are now balloting for industrial action, while GMB Union will run a campaign for pay justice.

Will Dalton, GMB Organiser, said:

"Staff are sick to death with the council making false promises.

"Successive leaders have made promises to right the gross injustice by paying these hard-working shift workers the back pay they are owed. Yet time and time again they are let down.

"Council leader Tom Hunt said he'd lead a new style of council - one that listens, yet on this fundamental challenge he's let low paid workers down.

"Sheffield Labour needs to step up and practice the values it preaches, instead of marginalising and belittling low paid women who provide essential services to keep services open.

"GMB will escalate our action over the next few weeks and call on the people of Sheffield to stand with us in our campaign to get these staff the wages they are owed."
